    Preventing Salmonella

    Salmonella can occur in many food however the most commonly associated foods are chicken, eggs, sprouts and other vegetables, pork, fruits, and processed foods like chicken nuggets and nut butters.  The most common occurrences have been linked to chicken.

    Salmonella can also be spread from people to people and from animals to people.  Proper handwashing is critical after handling or coming in contact in animals.  Animals like lizards, snakes, birds, and turtles have naturally occurring salmonella.

    Are you taking these steps to prevent Salmonella?

    • Cook to an internal temperature of 74°C (165ºF).  Whole poultry  
      82°C (180°F).   Proper storage- avoid cross-contamination.
    • Consume only pasteurized juice, cider, milk and milk products.
    • Washing and sanitizing all surfaces, equipment, dishware, and utensils after preparation.
    • Proper handwashing.
